Hospital Retransfer Rate Drops to 0.6%: How AI Has Transformed Prehospital Decision-Making
<p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">Emergency cardiovascular AI improves ECG utilization and hospital retransfer rates; transport to PCI-capable hospitals rises to 96% following the introduction of ECG Buddy.</span></p><p> </p><p><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;"><strong>[Jeju Domin Ilbo, Reporter Woo Jong-hee]</strong> Jeju is developing a new cardiovascular emergency care ecosystem centered on artificial intelligence (AI)-based electrocardiogram analysis, connecting hospitals, fire and emergency services, and data platforms. A collaborative framework has been established in which ECG AI technology developed by Seoul National University Bundang Hospital is applied by the Jeju Fire and Disaster Headquarters in prehospital settings, while Jeju National University Hospital oversees its operation and evaluates its performance. This has led to higher ECG utilization rates, improved transport to appropriate hospitals, and confirmed accuracy in predicting myocardial infarction.</span><br> </p><p><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">At the “Jeju AI-Based Symposium on the Transport, Interhospital Transfer, and Collaborative Care of Critically Ill Cardiovascular Emergency Patients,” held on the 31st, Professor Kim Jung-hee of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital presented the background and clinical applications of ECG AI technology in a session titled “Electrocardiogram Artificial Intelligence for Emergency Care.”</span><br> </p><p><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">“ECG is an inexpensive and rapid diagnostic test, but it has not been sufficiently utilized in emergency settings because pattern recognition, quantification, and clinical interpretation are difficult,” he said.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">He continued, “By using AI, we have improved the detection of various warning signs—including myocardial infarction, heart failure, hyperkalemia, pulmonary edema, right ventricular dysfunction, and pericardial effusion—to a level that can be practically used in emergency departments and prehospital emergency care.”</span><br> </p><p><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">The ECG AI system is currently integrated with 120 hospitals across Korea and analyzes approximately 250,000 ECGs per month.
