“We Created an AI Companion That Quickly Interprets ECGs for Emergency Patients”

When a patient suspected of having heart disease arrives at a hospital, medical staff perform an electrocardiogram (ECG). An ECG visualizes the heart’s electrical signals as waveforms, and even experienced specialists may find it challenging to interpret them accurately. This difficulty is compounded in emergency departments, where clinicians must make rapid and precise decisions under extreme time pressure.

Kim Joong-hee, who has served as a professor of emergency medicine at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital since 2014, has encountered such challenges numerous times in real clinical settings.

“In the emergency department, there are many situations where physicians must make decisions on their own,” he explained. “Not having a colleague nearby to consult with was often difficult. I began personally testing an AI-based ECG analysis tool, and the results were very promising. When I wanted to make this tool available to other clinicians, regulatory approval was required—so I decided to establish a company and formally develop the product.”

In July 2021, Professor Kim founded the biotech startup ARPI Inc., having already completed the initial development of ECG Buddy, an AI-powered ECG analysis application. In September, the clinical trial results for ECG Buddy were submitted to Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). Pending regulatory approval, the application is expected to be commercialized in early the following year….

Source: The Medical
