How ECG Buddy Became a 'Cultural Movement' in the ER
<p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:22px;"><strong>ECG Buddy’s Spread, Now a “Cultural Movement”</strong></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">The number of hospitals that have fully integrated ECG Buddy into their systems is about to surpass 100. It is spreading like a true 'cultural movement.' In the conservative field of emergency medicine, such rapid adoption of a medical AI device is highly unusual.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">How was this diffusion possible?</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"> </p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:22px;"><strong>The Absence of Information and the Weight of Decisions</strong></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">The moment a new patient is registered, Emergency Medicine physicians bear infinite responsibility for the final outcome of a complete stranger, someone whose history is unknown and who has had absolutely no work-up.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">Yet, time and resources are woefully insufficient. Holding an ECG strip and pondering, "What sign is this? What does that finding mean?" is a luxury we cannot afford in the ER. Moreover, during night shifts, we often have to bear the entire weight of these decisions alone.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"> </p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:22px;"><strong>Turning Complexity into Intuition</strong></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">In these moments, what the ER needs is fast and effective intuition. ECG Buddy provides this intuition from the 12-lead ECG. In this process, we simply show 'uncertainty as uncertainty.' And the physician integrates this information into their own 'Clinical Gestalt' to make faster and more accurate decisions. </span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">We believe this is the essence of the most honest and efficient clinical support.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"> </p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:22px;"><strong>A Rational Choice for the Harsh Reality of Emergency Medicine</strong></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;">The adoption of ECG Buddy by Emergency Medicine physicians is a natural phenomenon driven by a desire for better patient care and the critical necessity to avoid errors. This is why I call it a 'Cultural Movement.' It is not merely the adoption of AI; it is the most rational choice made by physicians to overcome the harsh environment of the ER through technology.</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:18px;"><strong>Author:</strong> Joonghee Kim, MD</span></p>
